Roma fans clashed with police as huge crowds descended on Kensington before their Champions League game against Chelsea.

Large swathes of supporters from the Italian capital took over pubs around High Street Kensington on Wednesday evening.

About 10 police vans and scores of officers lined the streets to escort them towards Stamford Bridge.

Video footage has emerged of scuffles breaking out between fans and police.

Sports journalist Ed Malyon tweeted: “About 10 police vans escorting large group of men down Kensington High St towards Earls Court after some scuffles. Think they're Roma fans.”

Another Twitter user added: “So so so many police in High St Kensington hope everyone stays safe.”

Another said: “Roma ultras taking over the Greyhound in Kensington square. Police vans everywhere.”

The Roma fans were 'kettled' by police before being escorted in the Earl's Court direction.

A Met Police spokeswoman confirmed scuffles had broken out and said one arrest had been made.

She said: "We were called at 5.44pm to reports of a disorderly group at High Street Kensington.

"Officers attended and dispersed the group."
