A businessman has walked free from court after being cleared of groping a waitress in an exclusive Wembley Stadium suite after an England football match.

Stephen Dewsnip, 49, was acquitted by a jury at Harrow crown court of pulling the woman towards him and “fondling” her bottom as she collected glasses.

She claimed he sexually assaulted her in a bar at the stadium while celebrating England’s Euro 2-0 2016 qualifier victory over Switzerland last September.

But Mr Dewsnip, the founder and ex-chairman of Guernsey FC, told the court he “would never act in this way”, saying he had not touched anyone’s bottom, even accidentally.

Following his acquittal, the businessman said he was “delighted that the jury saw the truth of the matter” and criticised the decision to charge him.

He said: “This has also been a terrible ordeal for me, my partner, family and friends. I am thankful that my good name has now been restored and that I can now get on with my life.”

Dewsnip, of Castel, Guernsey, pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault.

He was acquitted by the jury at the end of a five-day trial.
