Brave bystanders stepped in to detain a suspect after a man was stabbed in the head outside a McDonald's on a busy high street today.

Police were called to Bromley High Street, near to the junction with Church Road earlier today after the victim was attacked.

The man, who paramedics said was in his 30s was rushed to hospital by ambulance, while a suspect was arrested by police.

Police said they did not know how serious the man's injuries were but pictures of the scene showed a man with his head heavily bandaged after the attack.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called Bromley High Street at approximately 11.20 to reports of a stabbing.

"London Ambulance Service was called to the scene.

"A man in his 40s was taken to a south London hospital. His condition is unknown.

"One man was arrested by police after he was detained by members of the public at the scene."

The suspect is currently in custody at south London police station.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 11.23am today to reports of an assault on High Street in Bromley.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including an incident officer.

"We treated a man reported to be in his thirties. He was taken as a priority to hospital."

A police cordon has been put in place around the area, and route 208 227 320 357 and 358 buses are subject to delays and diversions.
