A man was found critically injured near a primary school after a stabbing in east London, police said.

Detectives said a man was arrested near the scene after a 20-year-old was found with knife wounds in Barking just before 6pm on Tuesday.

Witness Rob Deasy told the Barking and Dagenham Post: "I turned round off Suffolk Road onto Ripple Road and I noticed some barriers and a police presence.

“I turned my head and saw a body on the ground next to the police.

“As I was completing my run I noticed they’d put one of those space blankets round the body – like the things you have after a long run”.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the victim was taken to an east London hospital and remains in a critical condition after the incident near Ripple Primary School.

The man arrested remains in custody, he added.
