Former No 10 spin doctor Andy Coulson will appear before a Scottish court next month over perjury allegations related to the trial of socialist politician Tommy Sheridan.

The 46-year-old was today served with an indictment to face proceedings at the High Court in Glasgow on August 6, the Scottish Crown Office confirmed.

The former News of the World editor was charged with perjury by police in 2012 after being questioned in connection to his evidence at the 2010 trial, where Sheridan himself was accused of perjury.

He appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court in June 2013 where he made no plea or declaration and was granted bail.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The Crown Office can confirm that an indictment was served on Andrew Coulson today, 7 July 2014 and that a Preliminary Hearing is scheduled for 6 August 2014 at the High Court at Glasgow."

Coulson was last week jailed for 18 months at the Old Bailey for plotting to hack phones in a high-profile trial which saw his former colleague and lover Rebekah Brooks cleared of all charges.
