A murder inquiry was under way today after a 34-year-old Polish man was found dead in a house in west London.

Neighbours reported being woken yesterday morning by screaming from the four-storey terraced house in Alfred Road in the early hours.

Olah Hakim, 30, a PhD student, said: “I heard a really loud scream. It woke me up, and my baby son. It was a young woman’s scream and it went on for about 10 seconds.”

A cordon remained around the house today and police conducted house-to-house inquiries.

Neighbours said they believed a Polish couple were living in the shared house. One said: “Police told us not to worry. From that I gathered that there was some domestic situation in the flat.”

A man aged 33 has been arrested on suspicion of murder and was being questioned at a north London police station today. No details were released on how the victim died.

Detective Inspector Mark Richards, who is leading the inquiry, said: “This man was fatally attacked in his own home. Our efforts are focused on bring the culprit to justice. At this early stage there is nothing to suggest entry to the property was forced.

“A number of active enquiries are under way, including forensic analysis at the crime scene and the gathering and review of local CCTV footage.

“We continue to appeal for help from the local community who may have seen or heard something that could be vital to our investigation.”

The murder is the seventh in the capital so far this year.

Two teenagers and a young man were also injured in separate knife attacks in the capital this weekend. A boy aged 15 was attacked in New Park Road, Brixton, at 7.20pm on Saturday. A 16-year-old boy was arrested and remanded in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

In Harrow, a 17-year-old boy was wounded in Masons Avenue shortly before 9pm.

A man aged 23 was found stabbed in Crowthorne Road, Notting Hill, at 6.30pm yesterday by police called to reports of a fight. He was treated in hospital. No one has been arrested.
