I really hated being pregnant, says Billie Piper

3 January 2013

The singer turned actress gave birth to son Eugene Pip last April, after having Winston James in 2008 with her husband, actor Laurence Fox. But unlike other stars who have gushed about the joys of pregnancy, Piper, 30, told chat show host Graham Norton that she did not enjoy the experience.

Appearing on Norton’s first show of 2013, Piper said: “It’s stressful and wearing. You’re either one of those that love it and embrace it or you find it frustrating and uncomfortable and I was that girl. It pushed me to the edge.

“I was frustrated, but probably not as much as Laurence who was on the receiving end.” Piper, who is attracting rave reviews for her role in medical drama The Effect at the National Theatre, said the intimate nature of live performance was “terrifying” compared with her role on TV as Dr Who’s sidekick Rose.

“The closeness of the audience is daunting,” she said. “You can literally reach out and touch them. The show leaves no stone unturned in terms of physical fights, love declarations and scenes of a sexual nature, which makes the closeness terrifying.”

She denied she intended to reprise her role as Rose, saying: “No, I’ve not been asked.” Piper appeared on the chat show alongside comedian Frank Skinner, who said he was a huge fan of Dr Who and once asked his manager to get him a part on it.

The Graham Norton Show is on BBC1 tomorrow at 10.35pm.
