Cate Blanchett has revealed she initially felt she'd "bitten off more than she could chew" when she accepted a role in the film Blue Jasmine.

The 44-year-old Australian actress, who this weekend scooped a Golden Globe for her performance, said playing the character of trophy wife Jeanette Francis was like "going into battle every day".

In an interview with Vogue.co.uk, she admitted she had concerns when she started rehearsals for Woody Allen's hit film about how she was going to do Jeanette's alter-ego justice.

"I felt when making the film that I'd bitten off more than I could chew," she said. "It was such a complex, absurd, intense role - it was like going into battle every day."

But the married mother-of-three, who won the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama on Sunday, is delighted the movie has been a success.

She added: "I'm just happy that it's still on screens and that people are watching it - particularly that it's being enjoyed across different generations because the character does and says a lot of unpalatable things.

"If people can empathise with that then my job is done."
