Gary Lineker has paid tribute to his mother Margaret after she died at the age of 76.

The former England striker confirmed the news days after missing Match of the Day because his mother was "very poorly."

Today he said in a tweet: "I am profoundly saddened to tell you that my wonderful, beautiful mother has left us. She will though live on in my heart and mind. #RIPMum".

Lineker, who scored 48 goals in 80 appearances for England is thought to have travelled to the Isle of Wight over the weekend to spend time with his mother where she lived.

Margaret, who only had one kidney, was reportedly receiving dialysis four times a week in 2013.

After confirming he was missing Match of the Day over the weekend, he tweeted: "Thank you all so much for your good wishes. It's overwhelming really and massively appreciated."

Mrs Lineker had been receiving hospital treatment in Leicester two years ago when thieves tailed her home and stole her car and handbag.

The former England striker took to Twitter to appeal for help at the time, saying: “Some rotter has stolen my mum’s car after dialysis in Leicester. I’ll reward any help with return.”

Lineker renewed his MOTD contract in June for another five years. The deal with the BBC was thought to be non-exclusive, allowing him to work for other companies including BT Sport.
