A member of the Leading Hotels of the World, The Landmark London is an inviting hotel in the heart of the capital.

Where is it? In London's ever fashionable Marylebone, rather conveniently opposite the station.

What's the story? Originally opened as The Great Central Hotel in 1899, this is one of the last of the great Victorian railway hotels in Britain. The hotel’s design reflects the wealth and power of the era - think beautifully detailed carpets and a sweeping staircase.

A key part of the hotel is the soaring eight-storey glass-roofed atrium which makes for a breathtaking centre-piece to the imposing building. There are 300 rooms, 51 of which are suites. With an average size of 55 sqm and suite size of 97sqm, these are some of the largest guest rooms in London.

Which room? The Great Central Suite has just been revamped. Muted, calming décor, old-fashioned telephones and suitcases carry on the railway theme. It is the perfect starting point for a weekend break, with history and character rooted in the hotel.

On the menu: The Winter Garden serves modern European cuisine including a generous breakfast, lunch and dinner in picturesque surroundings. Try the lobster and king prawn cocktail to start, followed by Dover Sole for main and a Valrhona chocolate fondant for pudding. The Mirror Bar is a decadent but intimate place to go for a post dinner tipple.

Extras: The Spa & Health Club is a good place to wind down. It offers a range of treatments, from pampering massages and body care therapies to exceptional facials. There is also a 15-metre chlorine-free heated swimming pool, a gym, aromatherapy experience showers, Jacuzzi and sanarium.

Who has stayed there? Everyone from the Manchester City Football Club to pop star Katy Perry.

Price: Rooms start from around £260 per night.
