The Hoxton, Paris - hotel review

It’s edgy, chic and full of Parisian history

The Hoxton, Paris - the largest addition to the Hoxton brand - opened nearly a year ago and it has already become a hit with hip travellers and locals.

With its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff, guests will definitely find it difficult to leave long after checkout.

Where is it?

The hotel is in Sentier, in the northern part of Paris’ 2nd arrondissement. The area is historically known as a textile and garment manufacturing district. Currently the city’s neighbourhood du jour, Sentier is also becoming a foodie destination as fashionable eateries have set up home there.

Style

It wonderfully injects its signature Hoxton urban style with its building’s historical roots, which was once home to Louis XV’s advisor Etienne Rivie.

The team behind Soho House worked their magic on the public spaces particularly the original spiral staircases and mosaic marble floors.

Each room, designed by local designers Humbert & Poyet, embraces the uniqueness, views and terraces of this beautiful 18th century hôtel particulier. All bedrooms have wood panelling, chevron timber floors and cornicing. The hotel also pays homage to its local designers and many of the furnishings comes from the country’s well-loved designers.

Facilities

The Hoxton group is known for less frills, but there are lots of perks guests can take advantage of. There is a free light breakfast bag that is delivered by the room door, the minibar goodies are sold with high street prices, plus free fresh milk and water are provided. International calls are free as is Wi-Fi.

On top of indoor and outdoor dining, and a cocktail bar, there is also a lifestyle programme offering masterclasses, lectures, exhibitions and yoga classes.

Food and drink

Rivie restaurant has a classic French brasserie style with a contemporary twist. It offers all-day French-inspired dishes made with locally-sourced ingredients. The hearty menu includes some Hoxton classics such as truffle fries.

The courtyard space is an airy, relaxed area.

For those who like aperitifs and digestifs, Jacques’ Bar is the place to be. It is a cosy space inspired by Marrakech’s Majorelle Garden, but with a reclaimed timber parquet de Versailles floor. Drinks on its menu are Moroccan-inspired, along with a big collection of fine wines and craft beers from local Parisian breweries.

Extra curricular

As it is located in the 2nd arrondissement, this boutique guesthouse is close to iconic Parisian sights such as the Musee du Louvre, Pompidou Centre, Musee d’Orsay, Jardin Tuileries as well as the Palais Royal. They are all within walking distance. For sophisticated shopping for the more fashion conscious there is Sezane and for someone with a sweet tooth, head over to L’éclair de Genie for some Parisian treats.

Which room?

Its 172 rooms come in four different sizes: Shoebox (smallest), Cosy (standard), Roomy (bigger), Biggy (largest). Those who are travelling light, opting for shorter stays or on a solo trip have enough space in the Shoebox room. However, those who want to be able to spread out a bit should go for either the Cosy or Roomy rooms. For longer stays and those who are starfish sleepers, the Biggy rooms are ideal. All rooms have walk in showers.

Ground floor rooms have high ceilings and bathtubs and there is a special surprise for anyone staying in room 313, as this duplex room open up to a shared courtyard with views of the Eiffel Tower.

What to Instagram?

The fully restored 300-year-old spiral staircases and the light-filled summery courtyard are a couple of its most Instagrammable areas. There is also the walk-in shower with the slick contemporary tiles.

Best for

Solo travellers and hip couples. Although it is not really family-oriented, guests with children can request cots and fold-out beds.
