A stone's throw from some of London's finest museums, The Ampersand Hotel is a perfect base for a cultural weekend in the capital...

Where is it? Moments from South Kensington tube station, close to Knightsbridge's fashion boutiques and restaurants. The hotel is also around the corner from Exhibition Road with the Science Museum, Natural History Museum and the V&A practically on the doorstep.

What's the story? The Ampersand opened in 2012 after an extensive renovation and is one of London’s original Victorian hotels, having first opened in 1888. The boutique property is independently owned and that really comes across in the attention to detail and warm, welcoming service.

Design details: Inspired by the cultural surroundings, there are nods to the nearby museums reflected in the interiors with five distinct themes running throughout; botany, music, geometry, ornithology and astronomy.

From the dramatic 20- foot staircase installation accented with goose feather wings to the bespoke upholstery featuring flowers and ferns, nature trickles throughout. The 111 bedrooms are individually styled with some balconied suites offering outside space.

Classic English heritage is teamed with contemporary touches. Look out for the restored Victorian features, from the impressive high ceilings to the gargoyles. Splashes of contemporary art can be spotted in the ground floor patisserie serving artisanal coffee and Champagne.

There is a good example of a clever basement revamp too as the Apero Mediterranean restaurant breathes new life into the original 19th century vault.

Which room? Deluxe Rooms offer a good balance of space and comfort with ornithologically-inspired interiors and furniture such as a chaise longue at the end of the bed or a comfortable armchair. Music lovers would appreciate the Superior style

On the menu: This is a popular destination for afternoon tea with a fun twist on the traditional. Served in the elegant French inspired drawing room, the tea is themed around science in homage to the neighbouring museum. Expect experimental cocktails and cute sweet and savoury trimmings. Oversized armchairs and hand woven rugs contribute to a cosy vibe.

Best for: a family stay packed with cultural activities.

What's the address? 10 Harrington Road, South Kensington, SW7 3ER

Room rates: Superior rooms start from £234 including VAT per room per night. Balconied suites start from £456 including VAT. Both rates exclude breakfast.
