Simon says: Don’t miss the twin delights of Budapest

We’re meant to be going to Budapest next month for a weekend. Given the collapse of the national airline, Malev, and stories about Hungary’s financial situation, we’re having second thoughts. What should we do? — Dawn Taylor, Hammersmith

Simon says: Go. The Hungarian capital is one of the highlights of central Europe.

Budapest is a city of many dimensions, and two halves. The older part, Buda (on the right bank

of the Danube), has a castle, a handsome Old Town and spectacular views from the Fishermen’s Bastion across the river. On the left bank, Pest is mostly 19th and 20th century, with a fascinating Jewish quarter.

Forty years of communism did the city — and country — no favours but Hungary was always ahead of the other Soviet satellites in challenging the Kremlin.

Today, Budapest is a busy yet welcoming city, with a wealth of attractions — plus great places to eat, drink and sleep. The first time I visited, in 1988, I stayed at the fine old Gellert (with its own Turkish baths), and since then I’ve never failed to find a good location: last time it was the stylish Art’otel by the river in Buda.

Because Hungary is outside the eurozone, you will probably find your pounds go further than you expect. Just take sterling, in cash, and shop around for the best deal among the many bureaux de change.

You should hope to get around

350 forint for each pound (which, incidentally, will buy you a beer in the average bar).

Budapest certainly faces some economic challenges, and anecdotally the level of petty crime has risen as austerity bites. But the overwhelming probability is that you will have a great weekend.
