Shoreditch's Andaz Hotel gets a multi-million-pound 'east London' makeover

Each room reflects the history and diversity of the East End

One of the first luxury hotels in Shoreditch has undergone a multi-million-pound make over so that each room captures the spirit of the east end.

The Andaz London Liverpool Street has spruced up each of its 267 rooms to reflect the history and diversity of east London.

Every room has pinstriped carpets - a nod to the typical designer suits worn by those working in the City. The base of each bed is covered in a jean-look fabric, honouring the area’s strong design and fashion focus.

Tattoo-style artwork has been embossed on to the leather bed headboards - a nod to the “hipster” culture of Shoreditch.

Photography of the area’s vibrant street art taken by London artist Martin Usborne covers the walls, with local artist Sophie Mo creating pieces in the bathroom.

Architects and interior designers Conran and Partners, who were behind the original design of the hotel,

created the refurbishment. The firm have worked with the Intercontinental and restaurant group D&D London - whose German Gymnasium in Kings Cross was named the most beautiful restaurant in the world last year.

Tina Norden, director at Conran and Partners told the Standard the rooms reflected the location of the Andaz. “The hotel is on the line between Shoreditch and the City so we wanted them reflect that and the diverse culture of the area,” she said. “The colour pallet is quite neutral and contemporary to reflect the city, but Shoreditch comes through in the details.”

She added part of the work was completed to - in part - keep up with other top openings in the area.

This year, American hotelier Michael Achenbaum has opened The Curtain members’ club and hotel, with Nobu group also opening their latest hotel in the area.

Ms Norden added: “It is partly to show that we are still here and still one of the best in the area.”

The site has been a hotel since 1884, becoming Andaz - which is owned by Hyatt hotels - in 2007.
