San Giorgio, Mykonos - hotel review

If you want to win Instagram points in Mykonos, it has to be San Giorgio, says Kate Lough

It’s no secret that Mykonos is the new Ibiza. But whether you’re on the island to party or not, there’s one hotel that sits well above the rest.

Here’s everything you need to know about staying at San Giorgio, from its boho-luxe interiors to what to order at its beach club.

Where is it?

You’ll find San Giorgio between Paradise and Paranga beaches, 10 minutes from Mykonos town and 15 minutes from the airport. Nothing is very far away in Mykonos, but you couldn’t really be better placed - especially if you want to party.

Style

Bohemian luxe
Design Hotels/San Giorgio

San Giorgio is bohemian luxe at its most studied perfection. It was opened in 2012, a project between the owners of nearby Paradise Club - Thomas Heyne and Marios aka the Kings of Mykonos - and the Design Hotels CEO Claus Sendlinger. The trio set out to achieve a temple to ‘holistic design’ with organic credentials, and they’ve passed with flying colours. On the outside, it’s the all-white cubist, Cycladic dream. On the inside, it’s all polished concrete surfaces, swinging rattan chairs, woven rugs, traditional Greek stools and matelasse quilts.

Food & drink

The food at San Giorgio is colourful and fusion-friendly - with a pinch of healthy eating thrown in for good measure. At breakfast, for instance, which you’ll find laid out by the pool, there’s everything from thick Greek yoghurt and cut fruit to local cookies and spinach and feta pies - as well as a diet-friendly spread of radishes, kale and other rainbow veg. At lunchtime - all meals are taken in the great outdoors, poolside - there’s a transatlantic mix of burgers, tacos and salads.

Which room?

Although all San Giorgios rooms share the same, highly snappable aesthetic, the Verande and Grande come with a lot more room space and generous terraces with views down to the glittering sea. The Mare rooms, however, all sit on the upper level and have little balconies and are more than big enough. All rooms follow a similar design blueprint - muted grey walls, super crisp white bed linen, raw wood details and slick pendant lamps - as well as straw hats and robes you’ll want to steal for padding down to the sea pre-breakfast.

Facilities

There aren’t facilities as such, but you will be happy to find the following: a lovely pool surrounded by mocha-coloured double daybeds, a little outdoor gym overlooking the sea and even an alfresco treatment room where you can enjoy massages. And while there’s no beach at San Giorgio, there are two jetties jutting out into the sea where you can bask in the sun until you feel ready to dive in once again. Much better than a traditional beach, in my opinion.

Extra-curricular

Whatever you do while you’re at San Giorgio, you have to visit Scorpios. The beach club started by San Giorgio’s owners, it’s easily the chicest place on the island for a drink. Go for lunch and then stay for sundowners - and keep ordering the mezcal margaritas until you find yourself dancing barefoot in the sand. Look out for their Sunday night parties.

Another winner on the island is Spilia’s - the in-the-know park their yachts just outside and stop for a sun-drenched lunch of grilled octopus on the rocks - and a swim, of course.

Best for

The gypset. Maybe you want to party, maybe you just want to chill by the pool. You’ll definitely want to take some pictures.

When to go

Mykonos is crazily busy in July and August - and often windy - so come in June and September for a more relaxed pace. The weather should still be mighty fine, and there’ll still be a buzz without feeling super crowded.

How to get there

You can fly directly to Mykonos, so why not? A teeny, tiny, airport, there’s nothing like landing just off a beach and being in your bikini 30 minutes later. Otherwise, there are ferry routes which bring you from Athens and all the neighbouring islands such as Andros and Tinos (book with directferries.com).
