Patagonia: far out in Chile's south

Perfect blend: Tierra Patagonia is designed to suggest a fossil
10 April 2012

Far from civilisation yet with the luxury of a spa, swimming pool and well-stocked bar, the 40-room and suite Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa opens next month in Chilean Patagonia. Sister to Tierra Atacama in northern Chile, the low-lying hotel edges the shores of Lake Sarmiento by the Torres del Paine National Park.

Designed by three of Chile's leading architects - Cazu Zegers, Roberto Benavente and Rodrigo Ferrer - to suggest a fossil blending with the surrounding scenery after Darwin's fossil-hunting expedition to Patagonia in the 19th century, all rooms, decked out with natural textiles, will look on to the dramatic peaks of the national park. Guided excursions include horse riding and walking trips to watch nesting Andean condors.

Three nights costs £1,240pp all-inclusive including airport transfers and excursions (fly from London to Santiago then to Puerto Natales airport, a one-hour drive away), tierrapatagonia.com
