The perfect swathe of rural charm that is the Cotswolds holds many a luxury hotel. One such, Dormy House, a family-run 17th-century farmhouse (part of the 400-acre Farncombe Estate near Broadway), recently re-opened after major changes.

The rustic pull — original oak beams, paneling, flagstones and log fires — has been given extra wellie with a dramatic redesign of the house and gardens.

Revealing the renovations in stages, all 34 rooms have been individually decked out with traditional touches — hand-painted wallpaper, antiques and the more modern Nespresso machines (can anyone work one?) and iPod docking stations. The pink-hued Attic, one of the two most lavish suites, is reached via its own private staircase. It has beams, a double shower and rolling views. Six spa rooms with their own entrance to the House Spa are due to open in February, with a range of treatments by English spa brand Temple Spa and a Veuve Clicquot Champagne Nail Bar.

Two restaurants overseen by Michelin-starred executive chef John Wood (ex-The Savoy, The Dorchester and Cliveden) will feature local produce, with the Garden Room’s “Trust Me” menu allowing guests to let the chef decide their dinner while the more rustic Potting Shed dishes up slow-cooked pork belly and ribs.
