Where is it? In a turn-of-the-century building in the buzzy Berlin-Mitte district which is full of hip shops, restaurants and bars.
Design details: The apartments combine the style and hospitality of a boutique hotel with the privacy and generous living space of a luxury flat. The minute you step into the courtyard and glimpse at the faded glamour of the original walls, it is apparent this is something special.
The suites have wonderfully high ceilings, French doors and ornate crown mouldings which evoke Berlin in the Golden Twenties. The collection of antiques, mismatched chairs and the in-suite baths with their sapphire-blue subway tiles really make a statement. Some of the apartments have generous dining tables and a very convenient kitchen area.
There are even small balconies with views onto the busy street below. Just fabulous.
Which room? Go for a Category 1 one-bedroom suite for ample space and a dramatic setting.
On the menu: Guests at the Gorki can add breakfast to their rooms for around £11 per person at one of two neighbouring cafés. Alternatively, there are many other options just steps away. The reception area is also stocked with soft drinks and bubbly.

When to go: Berlin is gritty and fun in the colder months or full of life as it heats up. Steeped in culture and history, there is always a reason to visit.
