These are just a few of the incredible photographs battling it out to win this year’s Sony World Photography Awards.

A selection of images submitted to the Open category of the 10th anniversary of the world’s largest photography competition was revealed today, just one month before its closing date.

Amongst the entries are a shoal of Wolf Snapper fish feeding on Plankton in Palau, Dalmation pelicans resting in Macedonia and two goths enjoying a portion of chips on Southend promenade.

A deer with a raven pecking his ear, taken by Briton Liam Thompson, is also among the thousands of entries that have been submitted to the 2017 awards.

Launched in 2008, the awards will crown a winner in four categories - Professional, Open, Student and Youth - at a ceremony at London's Somerset House next year.

Last year’s competition received a record-breaking 230,103 images from 186 countries.

Thinking of entering? The open and youth competitions close on January 5, while entries for the professional competition entries must be submitted by January 10.
