Crisis? What crisis? Just relax in calm Corfu

Greek retreat: the island of Corfu is far removed from the riots in Athens
10 April 2012

I have heard you talk about great offers in Greece, but where would you advise we go at the moment? We are on the wrong side of 60, but don't want a geriatric holiday. - Tony McKeever

There are some good deals to Greece at the moment, partly because of the impact on demand from all the scenes of violence in Athens.

For a peaceful holiday, I would avoid the capital - but thankfully there are direct flights to a wide range of islands where all is, as usual, calm.

The choice of destination depends on what you're after: for history and excursions, aim for Crete (my preferred location is towards the eastern end). If you want a reasonably unspoilt island, Kos is a good choice. And the prize for the most spectacular location goes to Santorini, which occupies a fragment remaining from a huge volcanic eruption.

For the best of just about everything, though, I reckon there is no need to go any further than Corfu. It's the closest Greek island to the UK; the main town is drenched in history; the coastline is dotted with gorgeous locations to eat and relax; and the interior has somehow managed to shrug off the tourism invasion.

In early July, you can find some packages with reputable tour operators for under £200. Pay
twice as much, and you can expect good-quality accommodation.
