When you emerge from Tottenham Court Road tube station, your options for slick cocktail bars can feel limited. But all this has changed with the transformation of the The Bloombury hotel’s new Coral Room.

What was once an ordinary reception area in this Edward Lutyens-designed Grade II-listed hotel is now the spectacular Coral Room: a 2,100 sq ft double height space which has had a once-over from interiors wizard Martin Brudnizki. Its original wood panelling has been updated in a glossy vivid coral, with original artworks by rising star illustrator Luke Edward Hall and five bespoke Murano glas chandeliers. The overall effect is beautiful with a definite feel of the Roaring Twenties to it. It manages to be design-conscious, luxurious and non-pompous all at the same time.

What really draws the eye is the central bar, which features a Calacatta marble top, a high-gloss timber front and lots of antique mirror and brass providing a decadent backdrop. There are plenty of velvet armchairs to sink into in private corners, but the coral leather stools at the bar are the ones to choose – it’s where you can watch the lengthy cocktail list being mixed, shaken and stirred.

Start with a couple of glasses of English sparkling, which the Bloomsbury champions, or a Gin Lane, my favourite order of the night. Hendrick’s gin, Viognier, St Germain, rose syrup and agave are poured together in the prettiest cut martini glass – it’s sweet but velvety soft.

Rum, cachaca and mescal all get a look in on the experimental menu. Try the Midtown Swizzle if things needs heating up: rum, sherry, passion fruit, lime and pineapple are all charged with an English sparkler.

Cocktails don’t come cheap here (they start at £12), but this is somewhere you come to impress.

it's not just a watering hole, however. It's a place to lounge for breakfast, whether you want poached eggs or a healthy acai bowl.
