From wild Scottish beaches to Africa’s most famous falls, here are the picture-perfect places to travel this year

It’s no secret that Instagram has changed the way we travel. Iconic vistas are now plagued with queues of visitors all lining up to get their own Instagram-famous shot.

In 2015, the alpine lake town of Wanaka in New Zealand began to invite and host Instagram ‘influencers’ to help boost tourism in the area – the result was a 14 per cent increase in tourists for that year, with the area being the fastest-growing place for tourism in the country. Just one hike up Roy’s Peak – one of the mountains that surround Wanaka – and you’ll find a line of like-minded tourists queuing up to take the same postcard-perfect picture of the view across the lakes.

So where should you go to take a stunning picture before the rest of the world cottons on?

A new study commissioned by Huawei to celebrate the launch of their new P Smart 2019 device has found the world's ‘must photograph’ travel destinations of 2019. You can see the top 10 below:

1. Colombo, Sri Lanka

2. Kobe/Yokohama, Japan

3. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda

4. Baden-Baden, Germany

5. Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

6. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

7. Kartarpur, Narowal District, Pakistan

8. Wadi Rum, National Park, Jordan

9. Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), US (Alaska)

10. Isle of Harris, Scotland

The study found that just under half of 18 to 25-year-olds try to travel to places their friends haven’t before, saying they want to ‘be the first’ to find these new travel locales.

Justin Costello, Huawei director of marketing, UK and Ireland, said: “It’s interesting to see that Gen Z are keen to get out and explore the world by treading their own path – enabling them to share with friends their experiences in these new ‘must shoot’ destinations on social media."

The study also found that while more than half of Brits have the travel bug, around 40 per cent would recommend their local area as a good place to visit, saying there are plenty of ‘Instagrammable’ spots nearby.
