Hell is other people, so why not hire your own slice of the world for the ultimate holiday: a private island rental. From uber luxury in the Maldives to the wholesome wilderness of Scotland, we've picked the most amazing private islands up for rent around the world.

Laucala Island, Fiji

You'll feel like a proper castway - albeit, a very luxurious one - at this tiny island in the South Sea archipelago of Fiji in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. For $150,000 per night, you can rent the whole thing and enjoy everything from a round of golf, cycling its perimeter, fishing, diving, sailing and a spot of spa pampering. It has 25 villas each with its own swimming pool, so invite 80 of your closest friends for one serious holiday.

Caribbean dream: Necker Island

Necker Island, British Virgin Islands

Richard Branson, probably the man most of us associate with private island living, kindly offers his sanctuary is the BVIs for exclusive hire to the tune of £65,000 per night. Comfortable sleeping 30 adults, renting Necker gets you the use of the Great House with its eight bedrooms and six two-person Balinese-style houses dotted around the island. Seems steep? The price includes all meals and drinks, windsurfing, water-skiing, SCUBA diving - oh and Wifi.

Tagomago Island, Ibiza

There are only a handful of private islands in the Med, so after a hard week's partying on the White Isle, what better way to relax than on Tagomago, 600,00 square metres of unspoilt Balearic beauty. Accomodation comes comes in the form of a six-bedroom modern villa that has all the trappings of a boutique hotel with sweeping terraces and day beds to soak up the views. And if you do fancy a night of partying, Ibiza itself is only a short boat ride away. It's cost you £88,495 for a week for up to 10 guests.

Royal Belize

Why not rent your own seven and a half acres of the Caribbean with an exclusive private island off Belize. For £2,676 a night (which seems like a relative bargain compared to the rest), your own island comes with a manager, chef and concierge so you can enjoy seamless days filled with jet skis, sea kayaking and paddle boarding. Helicopter tours, waterfall hiking and cave tubing can also be arranged. The five bedroom house sleeps 18 people.

Coco Priva Kida Hithi, Maldives

The Maldives, a collection of 26 atolls south west of India and Sri Lanka, have long been associated with secluded honeymoon getaways. But if you really don't want to see another soul, you'll be needed to splash out up to $20,000 a night for this little island retreat. With crystal clear aquamarine waters and pristine beaches, the island is dominated by a striking master villa with a beach length infinity pool, jacuzzi, private chef and even its own cocktail bar. You can also request a night sleeping under the stars.

Ariara Island, Philippines

One hundred and sixty miles off the coast of Manilla, you'll find your own slice of untouched Far East. You and your party of up to 18 guests will enjoy comtemporary thatched cottage accommodation, an infinity pool, endless stretches of soft white sand and a fleet of discreet staff to tend to your every need. This is a corner of the world that pollution and tourism does not find.

Quilalea, Mozambique

This is a private island retreat on the east coast of Africa that takes the environment and community into account. Scattered off the coast of Mozambique in the Quirimbas Archipelago, you can have all 86 acres and seafront nine villas to yourself - wholly uninhabited, this is a truly Robinsoe Crusoe experience. Snorkelling, kayaking in the mangroves and relaxing in hammocks are all on the agenda here.

Even if you can't afford super luxury in the Caribbean, you can still enjoy your own private island in the wilds of Scotland. For a snip (from £500 a night) you can rent the Isle of Scalpay, a little gem off the coast of Skye which comes with three cottages, wildlife and mountain views.
