London's best fried chicken

Spit-roasted is just fine but, for now at least, the coolest spots in London serve up their fowl fried and gourmet. Here are six places to eat so-sizzling-right-now chicken

Wishbone

This busy little bar is mildly chaotic, and the food (deep-fried macaroni cheese with your chicken, anyone?) is a deliciously unhealthy treat. Grab a seat in the cosier upstairs section if you can and enjoy a pile of free-range fried chicken (a portion of wings £4.50; thighs £6.50), skinny fries and some serious cocktails.

Unit 12 Market Row, Brixton Market, SW9, wishbonebrixton.co.uk.

Spit and Roast

It’s worth trailing across town for the wonderful buttermilk fried chicken from this brilliant food truck. The fried chicken bap (£6) is dangerously tasty, especially with the homemade Korean hot sauce and very good slaw. Other goodies may include chicken and sweetcorn chowder and mac ’n’ cheese (£3 each). It travels around London as part of the pop-up food market, Kerb, between The Gherkin and Brockley Market, so keep your eye on their Tumblr for their movements.

Rita’s Bar and Dining

It was chicken that gave Jackson Boxer the idea to start Rita’s. His offering — a fried thigh served in a white roll — is excellent, as is, for the veggies out there, the super-stodgy mac and cheese.

Rita's Bar and Dining is at Birthdays, 33-35 Stoke Newington Rd, N16 8BJ, ritasbaranddining.com.

Chooks

This is a posher, yuppier Nando’s – friendlier staff, more meat on your bones and even more gimmicks than the great house of chicken. Buttermilk fried chicken is served in a crumbly, not-too-greasy batter.

43 Muswell Hill Broadway, N10 3HA, chooks.me.

Roost

Another finger lickin' food truck using 'good, honest, British free-range chicken', currently parked up outside The Sun and 13 Cantons in Soho as part of a two-month residency.

The Sun and 13 Cantons, 21 Great Putney St, W1F 9NG, weareroost.com.

Caravan

The menu changes often, but try to catch the fried chicken (£6), served boneless, like a large nugget but better, with a fresh and zingy salad. The setting is a big, bustling, converted grain store with high ceilings and long tables. Finish with a coffee; the in-house blend is delicious.

Granary Building, 1 Granary Square, N1, caravankingscross.co.uk.
