For happy fish

Brady’s 513 Old York Road, SW18 (020 8877 9599; bradysfish.co.uk)
Run by passionate supporters of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Fish Fight campaign, this is the place to come for sustainable fish. It’s a bustling space with fishy murals and a seaside feel. Choose from traditional battered fish (from £7.50), or grilled lemon sole or brill (from £9.20), and dunk your chips in a fresh dill or tarragon sauce.

For thoughtful fish

Kerbisher & Malt 53 New Broadway, W5 (020 8840 4418; kerbisher.co.uk)
The original is in Shepherd’s Bush, but this branch has just opened in Ealing. A bright and airy chippy, it’s the place to come for well-thought-out fish and chips. It’s not too fancy either — if you want a fishfinger butty (£3.50), you’ll get a brilliant one. Fish in the fryer includes coley and pollock (from £5.80) and it’s all sustainable.

For fancy fish

Fish Market 16B New Street, EC2 (020 3503 0790; fishmarket-restaurant.com)
This brand-new City restaurant’s fish menu changes daily depending on what’s been caught, but expect mussels and lobster, and beer-battered fish and chips (£14), served at tables set with stripey napkins. The wine list is excellent (from the wine shop next door) and has been specially designed to pair well with fish dishes.
