Rebecca Seal's quest for the best reveals three top spots to enjoy a glass or three in town.

For waiting for a train

Wine Pantry

Unit 57, Grand Terrace, St Pancras Station, N1 (020 7403 3003; winepantry.co.uk)

This award-winning wine bar and shop stocks some of the best English wines: look out for Gusbourne, Camel Valley, Breaky Bottom and Ridgeview. About 20 are available for tasting by the glass (from £4.50) and it also sells British beers and spirits. You’ll actually want your train to be delayed.

For people-watching

Roast

The Floral Hall, Stoney Street, SE1 (0845 034 7300; roast-restaurant.com)

This restaurant, in an airy space overlooking Borough Market, works closely with Chapel Down vineyard in Kent, and has its own wines made there. Go for a glass of the delicious sparkling wine (from £11) and grab a seat near a window. The non-alcoholic cocktail list is very good, too.

For British grub

The Penny Black

212 Fulham Road, SW10 (020 7349 9901; thepennyblack.com)

A smart spot with a menu packed with British classics, including beef Wellington and kedgeree. The wine list regularly picks up awards, and has a large number available by the glass (from £7.50) or carafe. Start your evening with a glass of Nyetimber’s exceptional sparkling rosé, but be sure to try a bottle of Biddenden white, too.
