For a sweet tooth

Lanka

9 Goldhurst Terrace, NW6 (020 7625 3366; lanka-uk.com)

If you love cakes, then this little shop is for you — try the green tea chocolate gateau, or the miniature choux pastry in the shape of a swan. The chef, Masayuki Hara, has worked at Le Gavroche and his bread and butter pudding (£3.20) is delicious, delicate and light, but you’ll be hard-pressed to choose between all the treats on offer.

For a hangover cure

Albion

2-4 Boundary Street, E2 (020 7729 1051; albioncaff.co.uk)

This Shoreditch favourite bills itself as a caff, but it’s no greasy spoon. It’s a lovely, airy space that offers everything from a breakfast bap or Welsh rarebit, to six Colchester Rock oysters or grilled mackerel with horseradish cream. But be sure to leave room for a plate of the traditional bread and butter pudding (£6).

For lunching with kids

Ginger & White

4a Perrins Court, NW3; 1 Silver Place, W1; 2 England’s Lane, NW3 (gingerandwhite.com)

One of the owners is a food writer and stylist and it shows. All the owners have small children, so this is an ideal spot for toddlers. The bread and butter pudding (£3) is particularly sinful as it’s made with croissants and has just the right amount of wobble and richness. The coffee is excellent, too.
