The Crush: Lara Croft

After 16 years, the tomb raider still raises our pulse

Ever since we first played Tomb Raider in 1996 we’ve had special feelings for the ass-kicking beponytailed archaeologist Lara Croft.

There’s just something about a girl in khaki hotpants and a utility belt, particularly one who can infiltrate the tomb of Tihocan with one hand and shoot down maniacal gorillas with the other. And yes, we may have kept Lara underwater longer than necessary just to hear her pant… sorry, Lara.

As the video games developed so did our consoles, but what we could always rely on was Lara keeping cool under the cosh, with a pair of biker boots and an inappropriately sized chest. Even Angelina Jolie conformed when she played the role in the film franchise. So when we heard Ms Croft was getting a makeover for the March 2013 game release we were concerned. But happily, while we can’t condone the allegedly abusive plot line, we’re crushing on the newer, more lifelike Lara more than ever now she’s all combat trousers, big eyes and Scarlett Johansson lips. Though we do miss the butch little bum bag.
