Rihanna made Met Gala history in 2015 when she wore a huge yellow Guo Pei dress on the famous carpeted steps.

The stunning gown, which also sparked a million memes, has become one of the most iconic fashion moments in Met Gala history - however, the Fenty Skin founder has revealed she was nearly too “scared” to leave her car after seeing what others were wearing.

The annual fashion event, hosted by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, usually attracts the most memorable outfits of the year. In 2015, the theme was China: Through The Looking Glass and many celebrities were either criticised for cultural appropriation or for playing it too safe.

Rihanna however hit the perfect note as she turned to an avant garde Chinese designer for the event, even if on the night itself she felt overdressed for the occasion. “I was scared to get out of that car because I felt like I was doing too much. I was driving past the red carpet and I was seeing like gowns.”

“And I was like, ‘Oh my god. I’m a clown. People are going to laugh at me, this is like too much.”

Speaking to Access TV via Zoom, she explained that she “circled three times” in her car before finally working up the courage to face the cameras. “Finally I was like, whatever. Let’s go. Let’s just go.”

“I don’t regret it,” she continued.

Inevitably, Rihanna also addressed the memes that sprung up around her dress - comparing it to everything from a pizza to a giant omelette. Saying she is aware of the memes, she continued, “Frying pan with the egg. Legendary.”

Rihanna is consistently one of the most talked about celebrities whenever the Met Gala rolls around, though was absent from 2019's Notes on Camp event. She did however share a picture of Wintour in her feathered and sequined Met Gala outfit hailing her “best dressed.”

Her previous outfits have included the 2018 ‘pope’ outfit by Maison Margiela and striking Rei Kawakubo dress in 2017.
