‘I want women everywhere to be more careful with the things they say to themselves’

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, #TOGETHERBAND has gathered Princess Eugenie, actress Jameela Jamil and model Halima Aden to share their messages of empowerment.

Appearing in a short video called ‘I Wish, I Want,’ all 10 of the women were asked about what she wishes she had known or seen more of in the past and what she wants for all women in the future.

Kicking off the video was Jamil, who founded I Weigh in 2018 as a supportive community to push for change (most notably, championing policies regarding diet and detox ads shown on Facebook and Instagram).

“I wish I hadn’t told myself when I was younger that my entire worth as a human being depended on a number on a weighing scale,” Jamil said, later adding, “I want women everywhere to be more careful with the things they say to themselves. If you wouldn’t tolerate those things being said to a woman you love, you are not allowed to say those same things to yourself.”

Princess Eugenie also appeared in the video, where she said her wish was “that women and girls could come together more.” She also shared, “I want the 28.7 million women enslaved today to become free.”

Aden, who made history as the first hijab-wearing fashion model, was featured in the video as well. “I wish I had more confidence when I was little,” said Aden, who also serves as a UNICEF ambassador. “Something I want for every little girl is to be confident, to know that she can be the president of the company, to be the CEO, to not limit her dreams.”

Each of the women in the video wore the orange #TOGETHERBAND, whose entire proceeds support the United Nations’ 5th Global Goal of gender equality.

The intergovernmental organization has established 17 Global Goals in total, with #TOGETHERBAND creating a colored band to represent each one. All of the bands’ proceeds help fund projects in support of a sustainable future, and they are made with accessories brand BOTTLETOP, using reclaimed ocean plastic, decommissioned firearm metal and handcrafted by artisans in Nepal.
