The BAFTAs is the biggest night on the British film calendar and its red carpet commands the attention of the world as the stars turn out in everything from fabulous gowns to immaculate tailoring.

This year saw BAFTA President Prince William, Timothee Chalamet and director Spike Lee hit the red carpet in their own interpretation of the black tie dress code - some very traditional, some less so.

But who came out on top? Here's my pick of the very best dressed men at the 2019 BAFTAs.

Ben Hardy

Rex Features

Ben Hardy has been turning heads for a long time and tonight he did so again on the red carpet in the great choice of an all-black look which included a black (skinny) shawl collar tuxedo jacket and shirt which was paired with tuxedo trousers with some fantastic side embellishment. All this topped off with cool Cuban heels. Stellar.

Barry Jenkins

Barry Jenkins has come to be a favourite on the red carpet for his consistently clean and refined awards ceremony looks. Tonight the award-winning director, nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, showed up in a slick navy blue tuxedo, minus socks, which seemed intentional.

Bradley Cooper

Choosing to keep things classic, the director and lead actor of A Star Is Born – who won Best Film Music– went for a beautiful black tux, carrying it with the confidence of the award-winning actor he is.

Gwilym Lee

Movingly, Gwilym Lee said he wore the cufflinks given to him by his Mum on his 18th birthday, who had said to him back then "wear them to the BAFTA's one day". But this isn't the reason he made the list - it's that beautiful navy shawl collar tuxedo and sweetly-tied velvet bow tie.

Henry Golding

Henry Golding was expected to be dashing on the BAFTA red carpet and he certainly delivered on those expectations. The Crazy Rich Asians star showed up and stood out in a black peak lapel velvet tuxedo paired with velvet loafers.

Joe Alwyn

At tonight's BAFTA ceremony the 27-year-old Brit and star of The Favourite rolled through in a black single button double breasted tux. By all means different and by all accounts perfectly dandyish – and what you might expect from a man with two Prada campaigns under his belt.

Luke Evans

Luke Evans has never failed to impress on the red carpet and tonight, donning a navy velvet and back shawl collar Corneliani tuxedo set, he upped the ante and won.

Mahershala Ali

You must admire the men who don tuxes and formal wear that tower beyond the classic. Mahershala Ali served sartorial swagger in a black tuxedo that caught the eye because of its subtle snakeskin printed design.

Prince William

Dave Benett

It's safe to say the Duke of Cambridge is a class act at carrying a classic tux. At tonight's ceremony Prince William, who is President of BAFTA, showed up in a black tuxedo accompanied by and complimenting the Duchess of Cambridge, who wore white Alexander McQueen. By all means presidential and certainly one of the best-dressed men at the BAFTAs.

Rami Malek

Different is always a risk with potentially high return and Rami Malek's red carpet look was a case in point. Styled in a white tuxedo ensemble, paired with a black shirt and bow-tie, the award-winning actor who played British icon Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody was the definition of debonair.

Richard Madden

PA

Richard Madden was a stunner on the BAFTA red carpet in a black shawl collar tux. While it made for a decidedly dapper look what caught the eye of many was the silver streak in the 32-year-old Bodyguard star's neatly slicked black hair. A mature finishing touch to a great awards ceremony look.

Spike Lee

Rex Features

Royalty. This was the word that came to mind when Spike Lee walked the red carpet in a purple tuxedo, paired with a silk purple shirt and gold trainers which had the words of his BAFTA-nominated film, BlacKkKlansman, emblazoned on them. Lee's purple and gold colour combo was a win.

Taron Egerton

Taron Egerton learned more than a thing or two about sartorial panache from Kingsman, and tonight he made that clear. The young actor went for a green Giorgio Armani velvet dinner jacket, black tux trouser and matching velvet loafers, signalling his panache with all things formal wear.

Timothee Chalamet

A red carpet favourite who's style risks have turned into trends, Timothee Chamlet donned a leopard print metallic blazer and shirt combo with a black trouser (featuring a checkered stripe side detail) and combat boots - all by Haider Ackerman.

Will Poulter

Will Poulter kept it clean on the BAFTAs red carpet. Donning a classic black peak collar tux with a beauty of a knitted bow-tie, the 25-year-old Black Mirror: Bandersnatch amped up the charisma.
