Airbnb has outdone its wild windmill listings with the limited opportunity to stay at a luscious room inside the epochal Moulin Rouge.

The sumptuous 19th century-style apartment, previously unknown to most, is now open for public access for the first time in its 133-year-old history.

Holiday rental site Airbnb is offering overnight stays in the transformed Belle Epoque boudoir, originally built in 1889, for three individual one night stays on June 13, 20 and 27.

For $1 a night, the experience includes a private tour behind the curtain, seats at the Moulin Rouge show Féerie and a Parisian three-course meal.

Revealing the room after the 9pm show, when you’ll be most ready to rest your head on artisanal, feathery furnishings, chosen guests can ascend from the raucous nightclub below to the romantic room.

A four-poster bed fills the space, alongside a carefully curated vanity (think handwritten letters, perfume puffs and scattered accessories) and art nouveau features, such as a mini paper stage and tiny performers.

Find your way through the draping fabrics to the outside terrace, where host and lead dancer of the Féerie show Claudine Van Den Bergh said guests will be transported “ back to the cabaret’s origins”.

Jean-Claude Yon, historian in 19th century France, collaborated with Airbnb to capture the period appropriate feeling. He said: “The Belle Époque era was a time when French culture and arts flourished – and no landmark is more iconic to that period than the Moulin Rouge.

“This secret room inside the cabaret’s famous windmill has been designed to take you on an authentic journey back in time to experience the French capital of arts and pleasures during a moment in history.”

Book one of the three nights for two guests here if you “can-can”, the site reads - when the listing opens on Tuesday May 17 for verified Airbnb account holders with existing positive ratings.
