For years, all three main French car-makers produced models which seemed flimsy, especially in the cabin. All have raised their game considerably lately, but Peugeot has moved the standard on even further with its 3008 SUV.
The stylish cabin features an i-Cockpit, a configurable electronic eight-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch high-resolution instrument panel with five display modes. It’s quite like the optional Virtual Cockpit system on some Audi and VW models, which cost up to £2,000, but the i-Cockpit is standard on all new 3008s.
Materials in the Peugeot’s cabin have a premium feel and major components such as the small, squared-off steering wheel, manual gear lever and automatic gear selector have a pleasing, chunky tactility. The piano key toggle switches felt pleasant to use.
Engines range from 1.2 to 2.0-litre petrols and diesels with 99 to 181hp. Prices are from £21,795 to £32,995. The most popular engine will probably be the 120hp 1.6-litre BlueHDi diesel, which is highly refined, pulls smoothly and claimed to be capable of 67.3mpg. During our test it managed 50mpg. The award-winning 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine is lighter and made the car feel slightly more agile and involving. It managed 38mpg.
Peugeot’s usual trim levels of Active, Allure, GT Line and GT are available and as well as comprehensive safety systems and good connectivity there’s attractive ambient lighting.
The 3008 has a longer wheelbase than before and more luggage space. Peugeot seems very excited about the new model and it’s not hard to see why. It is a big improvement on the outgoing 3008 and should win Peugeot plenty of new friends.
