Review: Nissan GT-R Prestige

Tyre-shredding Nissan is still as extreme as a GT can get, but with a civilised edge. Sometimes…

Nissan’s GT-R is a monster, no doubt. Always has been, and hopefully always will be. But now it’s available with added civility, which makes it more usable over longer distances and less likely to leave the driver a gibbering mess at the end of the journey.

The latest incarnation brings out the GT in GT-R, thanks to a more comfortable cabin that, with its Nappa leather trim, 8.0in infotainment screen and minimal buttons, exudes an air of quiet luxury. Our range-topping Prestige edition adds boosted seating and steering wheel adjustment into the mix.

All the better from which to experience the newcomer’s uprated 562bhp 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6. The ferocious engine unleashes its seemingly limitless muscle across an even wider powerband than before. If brutal performance and track work are your sole aims, then the even more extreme Nismo GT-R and Track Edition will do the job perfectly. However, on the road, this ‘standard’ car presents an ideal balance.

The civility extends to the Nissan’s driving experience. Upon start-up the engine noise is now electronically limited, while gearshifts are smoother and more refined than before, and improved aerodynamics and reduced drag let the car run quicker and cooler. At cruising speeds, the extra sound-deadening and easy steering are very welcome, and the supple, three-setting suspension makes for comfortable, even relaxing progress.

Fast A-roads are a different matter, and prove the GT-R has retained its mad side. The uprated power and aerodynamics make it an even more extreme, brutal experience than before, with enough lateral G-force to make you whimper.

That dual personality is what we love about the latest GT-R. Sensible(ish) when you need it to be, but utterly bonkers when you want it to be. Part-time GT, full-time thrills. Perfect!
