The Moonwalk 2019 London: Clapham route, date, bra ideas and all you need to know about Walk The Walk charity

Get your bras out and paint the town pink for breast cancer awareness this weekend

This weekend, as the sun goes down on the capital, hundreds of people will be taking to the streets to raise money for breast cancer awareness.

Back for its 22nd anniversary, the disco-themed Moonwalk challenge will see thousands of women and men wearing brightly decorated bras as they walk a Full Marathon (26.2 miles) or Half Marathon (13.1+2 miles) through the streets of London at night.

Iconic London landmarks will be turning pink for the occasion, including the London Eye, Battersea Power Station, Sky Garden and various bridges.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What is the Moonwalk?

The Moonwalk is a fundraising event where participants embark on a marathon-long walk wearing their sparkliest, most colourful bras to raise money for breast cancer awareness causes.

Its founder, Nina Barough, had the idea for the night-time race after 25 women who had planned to run the London Marathon for breast cancer did not secure a place. Undeterred, Nina set up her own one-off race on the eve of the London Marathon in 1998, with herself and a group of determined runners setting off at midnight and finishing the route at 7am the next morning. And thus, the Moonwalk was born!

Nina praises those who are coming from near and far to take part on Saturday night.

"The excitement is really building, and each year, after weeks and months of training, it is incredibly inspiring and empowering to see people, often against the odds, rise to this iconic but challenging experience of walking a Full or Half Marathon through the night."

When is the Moonwalk 2019 in London?

The Moonwalk is being held on Saturday 11 May.

Walkers will be asked to arrive between 8:30-9:30pm, although the exact start time will be subject to all local authorities and health and safety.

There are also celebrities taking part in the Moonwalk, such as TV & radio star Gaby Roslin, Sky News presenter Kay Burley and Tom Read Wilson from Celebs Go Dating.

As it’s a grant charity, all the money raised by those taking part in Walk the Walk challenges will be granted to other charities and organisations throughout the UK, with the shared aim of beating breast cancer.

Over the past 22 years, Walk the Walk has raised in excess of £128 million.

Founder, Nina Barough highlights the power of the cause:

"Of course in true Walk the Walk style everyone will be wearing the most fantastic ‘Disco inferno’ themed decorated bras which never cease to raise awareness in our fight against breast cancer. These wonderful people earn every bit of sponsorship that they raise!"
