These smart candles are the ultimate hygge accessory for autumn

The humble candle, that ultimate symbol of “hygge” and romance, has gone tech. With the right app, all you need is a swipe of your finger to create mood lighting and extinguish your candles.

First up is the Ludela. Its wax-like exterior conceals a refillable scented wax cartridge. This burns as normal but is controlled using Bluetooth “wi-fire”. It has an auto-extinguish safety sensor so if it’s knocked over it’ll snuff itself out.

The Playbulb, by contrast, doesn’t have real flames; rather it’s a tea light in a holder with colour and brightness controlled via an app.

But the ultimate tech-friendly mandle — and these are aimed at men, surely — must be the New Mac, a soy wax candle that claims to evoke top notes of your box-fresh Apple Mac (pictured).

Twelve South, the company that makes it, announced: “Ever open up a new Mac box and smell it? (or is that just us?). We took that scent and literally bottled it.” They didn’t, obviously; it contains mint, peach, basil and lavender.

Still, the candles sold out within two hours of going on sale, so they’re doing something right, but for my £20 I’ll stick with pure, unscented beeswax.
