The Evening Standard has teamed up with The National Theatre to host an evening debate on the issue of homelessness in the UK.

‘National Debate: Homelessness - better or worse in 2017?’ will see a panel of expert speakers discuss the the challenges facing rough sleepers in London and across the country.

Inspired by the National Theatre’s production of Love, the debate will touch on topics explored in Alexander Zeldin's acclaimed play, which tells the story of three families who are placed in temporary accommodation in the run up to Christmas.

Taking place Thursday 2 February, the discussion will be chaired by Evening Standard Editor Sarah Sands with speakers including Centrepoint CEO Seyi Obakin, Shelter Ambassador Louise Walker, writer and director Alexander Zeldin and Deputy Mayor for Housing James Murray.

It's reported that the number of people sleeping rough in England has risen for the sixth year in a row, with London accounting for 23 per cent of the England total.

The debate comes as latest official figures show an estimated 4,134 people were forced to sleep outside in 2016, a rise of 16 per cent on the previous year.

Tickets will be announced shortly and all proceeds from the event will go to homelessness charity Centrepoint.
