The stunning winners of the National Trust Handbook photo competition have been revealed - from Cornish clifftops to windswept Dorset beaches.

This is the first year in its 30 year history that members’ photographs will be included in the handbook.

More than 8000 hopefuls entered, but it was 54-year-old Paul Rook who took first prize with his salt-sprayed action shot of his partner Kevan and sister-in-law Antje on Dorset’s Burton Bradstock beach. His image will adorn the cover of the 2017 National Trust handbook.

Rook said: “We had gone down to the beach after visiting my brother, who lives in Portland. I wanted to practice my photography on some seagulls. But by chance I saw Kevan and Antje running back from a wave.”

He has been a member of the National Trust for three years and has been “completely blown away” by winning the photography competition.

Runners up include a dramatic shot of Atlantic waves crashing at Godrevy Lighthouse in Cornwall and walkers and their dog on a Northumberland beach under a dappled evening sky.

The winning photographs were chosen by a panel of four judges including TV presenter Julia Bradbury and photographer Andrew Butler.
