Road test: Peugeot 308 GT THP

Peugeot is trying hard to make a big noise, says Mike Stone

Peugeot’s much-improved 308 appeared in 2013 and went on to become European Car of the Year last year. Now there are more powerful flagship models, badged 308 GT, which are available as a hatchback or station wagon (SW).

The new car is a little lower, with a tweaked radiator grille, twin exhausts and scrolling front indicators, and is available with a 205hp 1.6-litre petrol engine or a two-litre 180hp diesel. Petrol cars all have six-speed manual gearboxes and diesels are all automatic. On the road, the petrol version feels responsive, with plenty of zip, although it is not in the same performance league as, say, a Golf GTi.

But the Peugeot is relaxing, with light and precise steering and a smooth ride. Both versions have a sport button that artificially produces a more snarly engine noise and changes the instrument lighting to red. But don’t get too excited, because performance is completely unchanged.

The diesel automatics have a choice of full automatic gear changes, sequential or paddle shift, all of which makes the car sound sportier than it feels. There is also a fair bit of wind noise, mainly from the chunky windscreen pillars, which also slightly restrict your view around corners.

The 308 GT range starts at £24,095 and is available with four trim levels. For people who want the slightly gutsier look without the extra grunt, Peugeot is introducing “GT Line” models across its range. Overall, the 308 GT is an amiable effort, with reasonable running costs. But drivers wanting more performance or driving pleasure will probably look elsewhere.
