Road test: Kia wins family’s approval

10 May 2013

There’s only one way properly to test a people-carrier — and that means sticking your family in it for a drive. Mine loved it.

The old Kia Carens was a bit of a throwback; boxy and slightly old-fashioned. The new one is nothing like that at all. Based on the Cee’d hatchback, it now has that vehicle’s smart, aggressive “tiger” nose, more sweeping lines, a ready-for-action pose and an attractive cabin. It’s a full seven-seater, with more room in the cabin and boot, great visibility all-round and high equipment levels.

There are three specifications to choose from; Level 1, 2 and so on, and three engines; a 1.6-litre petrol (from £17,895), as well as 114bhp and 134bhp versions of the 1.7 diesel.

Driving the Carens is a pleasing experience; the ride is supple and forgiving rather than sporting, making a good compromise for a vehicle that may have to carry one person or seven, plus luggage. The steering is light, though again, unsporting with a slightly “remote” feeling. It’s comfortable, quiet, and the 114bhp 1.7 diesel cruises assuredly at motorway speeds.

Niggles? It’s slightly awkward to access the rearmost seats and the gearbox, while easy enough, is a

tad notchy. But it’s a good-looking, sensibly priced car that makes family motoring life more attractive — and you get a seven-year warranty.
