Road test: DS3 Cabrio likely to win new friends

The Citroën DS3 Cabrio is a fun, boutique car with a solid and classy-feeling interior

DINKY convertible versions of image-conscious hatchbacks have long been the province of MINI and Fiat but now Citroën is joining in with the DS3 Cabrio.

Ironically, it pioneered the market a decade ago with the Fiat 500-sized Pluriel, which faded away. The open DS3, however, is a stronger prospect.

Looking virtually identical to the DS3 hatchback, the open version gets a clever, electric canvas roof, available in various, stylishly Gallic colour combinations, which peels back like a giant sunroof. Or alternatively the back window can be retracted so the roof carries on downwards where, like its Mini and Fiat rivals, it impedes rear vision.

It can be raised at speeds of up to 75mph, useful in a sudden rainstorm if you have nowhere to stop.

The boot is bigger too, and Citroën was keen to point out that the DS3 seats five, against its rivals’ four places, although the rear is still compact with limited room.

Still, for young families or singles seeking fun, it works very well, because from its new 3D rear lamp clusters to the colour combinations, and its solid, classy-feeling interior, this car is an entertaining thing. The energetic, six-speed, manual 1,598cc petrol version we drove was enjoyably precise, but rode well, without the jarring often expected with sporting dynamics.

Some wind noise aside, the cabin was quiet and comfortable with the roof closed, and my receding coiffure wasn’t messed up when it was open.

The DS3 has been a big success: a fun, boutique car where style hasn’t compromised substance. The Cabrio, offering more of the same but with a view of the sky, is likely to win it even more friends.
