Working too hard and ending a relationship prematurely are the biggest sources of anguish

As we grow older, the benefit of hindsight allows us to reflect on the things we wish we’d done differently.

But if you had to pinpoint your regret to one big regret, what would you choose?

That was the question posed to Internet users in a Reddit thread, who revealed the events of the past - or the events that didn’t happen - that play most on their mind.

One of the major things people wish they could go back and amend is not knowing what to do with their lives in terms of a career, with one user admitting that this was a ‘daily ongoing regret.’

Other common doubts centred on heartbreak or ending a relationship prematurely.

‘That regret you have when you break up with someone thinking “I can do better than this”, and then over the next several years slowly come to realise that, no, you're never going to do better than that.’

However, some users had the opposite issue.

They wish they’d stayed single longer so that they could devote more time to themselves.

Not spending enough time by myself - single, not in a relationship,' said one user. 'There's so many things I want to do that I can't really do if I'm with a partner.’

Many users also said that they wished they’d spent less time working and more time experiencing and enjoying life.

‘I'm not that old, but I regret being so serious and working so hard sometimes.

‘I think back and, although I'm proud of myself and my accomplishments, I wonder if it really would have mattered if I'd have just went to that house party, attended that pub crawl, or went on that road trip.’

Another user agreed:

‘Never living in the moment. There is a tendency for people to be so focused on what possibilities the future holds that they lose sight of the opportunities right in front of them.’

For others though, the big regrets were slightly more superficial.

‘Letting myself get so fat,’ lamented one user. ‘I was never really taught proper nutrition, nor was it enforced as a child.’
