Millennials now view getting drunk as “pathetic” and “embarrassing” as they shun alcohol for smoothies, according to new research.

A survey of 1,023 millennials found that alcohol consumption is on the decline in the younger generation, with millennials consuming just five units (the equivalent to half a bottle of wine) a week on average.

Only one in 10 participants in the EventBrite study saw getting drunk as cool, while the rest described intoxication as “pathetic”, “embarrassing” and “belonging to an older generation”.

Heavy boozing has fallen out of favour with the smartphone generation, who are now more likely to brag about how long it’s been since their last drink than how much they have been drinking.

The health-conscious Instagram Generation are choosing smoothies over alcohol

While partying at festivals is still on the cards for millennials, they’ve now become more food-focused. The majority of participants (68 per cent) said they would rather spend their last tenner at a festival food truck than the drinks tent.

Generation Y won’t be turning to the drink to cure the hangover the next day either: most participants said they’d rather have a smoothie than hair of the dog.

The researchers behind the study say millennials are now too health-conscious to get excited about alcohol. They also want to create memories, so vodka-filled amnesia is no longer appealing.

The study’s researchers also found that millennials feel increasingly able to talk about their feelings: they’d rather have a conversation than turn to drink.
