If you attended a wedding in the 2000s, it probably consisted of the bride wearing a strapless gown, the bridal party all sporting fake tans and wedding cupcakes being served at the reception.

As we approach the end of the twenty-tens, the social media boom of the past decade has meant brides now have limitless outlets for wedding inspiration and sites like Etsy, Pinterest and Instagram are the driving forces behind this.

Yet, we are still able to see how wedding trends evolve each year with the past 10 years being filled with naked cakes, DIY favours and photo booths.

Craft marketplace Etsy has now released its top seven wedding trends for 2019, which you can see below.

Statement sleeves

Long gone are the days of the classic sweetheart cut strapless neckline on a wedding gown, now brides are opting for statement sleeves. A look that is glamorous, romantic and incredibly Insta-worthy, Etsy has seen over 155,000 searches for ‘wedding dresses with sleeves’ over the past three months.

Veil alternatives

Last year Princess Eugenie was lauded after she skipped wearing a veil at her royal wedding in order to show off her scoliosis scar. Now, brides in 2019 are turning to veil alternatives, with over 43,000 searches for ‘bridal headpieces’ in the past three months so brides can make a statement of their own.

Nineties style

The ‘90s have been back ‘in fashion’ for a couple of years now and this year – as ‘90s kids start to get married - they’ve filtered through to our weddings. This year has seen a 14 per cent increase in searches for butterfly clips and over 307,000 searches for ‘rhinestones’ in just the past month.

Sustainable celebrations

London is firmly on the eco-conscious bandwagon and it looks like the multi-billion dollar wedding industry is heading that way too. In the past three months there has been over 107,000 searches for eco-friendly items on Etsy, with wedding items like reusable straws, biodegradable confetti and vintage décor becoming more popular than ever.

Unexpected textures

Sometimes it’s not what you can see but what you can touch – or at least that’s what the Etsy wedding trends have taught us. So far this year there have been 23,000 searches on Etsy for ‘laser cut wedding invitations’, a 15 per cent increase in searches for velvet wedding items and a 105 per cent increase in searches for ‘vellum wedding invitations’.

Secret messages

Many couples are incorporating secret messages into their wedding
Mood For Wood/Etsy

When it comes to a wedding, detail is everything and sometimes the best details are things your guests can’t see. In January 2019 alone there have been over 3,000 searches on Etsy for ‘secret messages’ with sellers creating matching initial wedding rings, embroidered dress patches and hand-stamped tie bars.

Functional favours

But can I use it? Favours will be functional this year
My Fair Guestbook/Etsy

Favours, small gifts from the newlyweds to the wedding guests, are all about functionality this year – gifts that will actually be of use to the recipient. Think personalised key rings, engraved pens and personalised wine stoppers - so far in 2019 there have been 11,000 searches for ‘wine favours’.
