Everyone knows that weddings are expensive - but it’s not just the bride and groom, and quite often their parents, that will be forking out.

From buying a congratulatory gift to attending the stag or hen party, research from home insurer Policy Expert has shed light on just how much a friend’s big day may cost an attendee.

It found that Brits, on average, splash out an eye-watering £644 celebrating the best day of someone else’s life.

For the average wedding guest, travelling to the wedding location (which may well be abroad) and splurging on a new outfit for the big day are the most financially crippling costs to consider.

According to its research, a smart suit or dress costs an average of £150 while while another £124 goes on staying overnight and £78 on travelling there.

There’s around £60 reserved for food, £70 for drinks at the bar and another £44 spared for a gift - and that’s before you’ve even factored in the hen or stag party.

Londoners who have reached their late twenties are most likely to be stung with multiple bills, as friends begin to settle down and tie the knot.

For better or for worse, there’s not much you can do about the rising cost of supporting your friends as they tie the knot, but there are corners you can cut when the invites start to pile up on your doorstep: car pooling, booking your train tickets in advance and buying your outfit in the sales are just a few ways of reducing your final bill.
