Handy: the AA's Road Atlas Britain 2015

I love sat-nav, but seldom drive anywhere unfamiliar without checking a map, too, as it helps to build a mental picture of where I’m going. Now the AA has released a set of new motoring atlases, complete with new roads, ferry routes, and so on.

Their own poll revealed that, while 88 per cent had a road atlas, over 23 per cent had an out-of-date edition, not good when you realise that, over the past five years, 10 significant road changes and approximately 1,000 new road amendments have been added to AA atlases.

Don’t hedge your bets

Missed a vital road sign thanks to rampant foliage? So have I — so it’s good news that road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging local authorities to tackle the problem. It says hidden signs are at best a nuisance, at worst misleading and dangerous.

“Road signs provide vital orders and information for drivers, who choose their speeds and actions based on what the signs tell them,” says a spokesman.

“If they can’t see the signs, their ability to make safe decisions is compromised, especially on unfamiliar roads. In the name of road safety, we call on local authorities to organise far-reaching cutbacks of trees, bushes and branches.”

GEM encourages drivers to report obscured road signs to appropriate local authorities.
