Caitlin Moran has declared that Twitter simply doesn't work.

The author and columnist, who has amassed 547k followers on Twitter, said that the social media network was "agressive" and a "very male arena". Essentially, a waste of internet space.

Moran was speaking at the inaugural Stylist Live event.

She added that Twitter was "not fit for purpose any more" and that it "should be our village square where we can all meet and talk to each other".

She cited the case of feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez who received death and rape threats via Twitter, following her victorious battle to reinstate a woman on the back of an English banknote. Moran said: “It was on the 10 o’clock news and Twitter didn’t really do anything. Up until that point, not many people really knew about Twitter. It was the worst advertising campaign ever.”

She went on to stress the negativity of the online environment, which is essentially “just bullet point things firing into your head, very adrenaline-y, makes people quite fight-y and everything’s coming at your very fast. There’s not much space, it gets quite aggressive quite quickly. It’s really competitive and doesn’t feel like a kind place.”

The prolific writer also predicted that it will be replaced by something much better: “I’ve no double something new will be invented soon and I suspect it will be programmed by a woman”.

She also joked: “If I’ve got 20 minutes free later, I’ll invent it myself.”
