London as you haven't seen it before

In the past two years, the humble satnav has escaped out of the car and into almost every phone.

However, while most of us simply use it to find our way around, a new breed of hi-tech artists is using the technology to turn London's streets into a giant electronic canvas.

Geo art, as it has been dubbed, uses co-ordinates around the capital to create giant pictures. When the co-ordinates are viewed on a map and joined together, in a hi-tech version of the join-the-dots game, they can be made to form pictures.

One of the highest profile supporters of geo art is fashion designer Henry Holland, who has recently completed a hi-tech photoshoot that used London locations to electronically "draw" a picture on the capital.

The designer chose 10 locations around London that have been instrumental to his career. When the route for the photoshoot is viewed on a map, the locations form a house - the logo of his fashion house.

The shoot for Holland's Autumn/Winter collection was created with Range Rover, which is running a series of geo art projects around the world.

"I'm always up for being part of interesting creative projects, and when Range Rover approached me to create my own geo art we devised the concept of shooting my look book through the streets of London," Holland says.

"All the shoot locations were chosen for their iconic backdrops or because they had a personal link to me. For example, I wanted to shoot a view including Centrepoint, as my first studio was in that part of town and we always used to shoot on the roof."

Perhaps predictably, there is an iPhone app to make the process easier. Called Pulse of the City, it tracks users as they move around, creating an image which is then emailed to them.

Other geo art projects around the world have included US rock band OK Go, who performed in a street parade around Los Angeles, drawing their name as they went.
