Life coach: How to buy jeans

US brands come up too big, Japanese too small, Scandinavian more or less right, says Dan Rookwood

I really struggle when buying jeans. Any pointers?

Nightmare, isn’t it? There’s no uniformity of sizing: US brands come up too big, Japanese too small, Scandinavian more or less right. And you can spend £40 or £400. To my mind you shouldn’t do either when £120-£150 will buy perfectly good selvedge denim from Jean Machine, APC, Levi’s Made & Crafted, Acne or Nudie. Go for straight-leg, slim-fit jeans. Pre-distressed jeans are too Eurotrash, so stick to indigo or black. And let’s have a bootcut amnesty. Street crime (in a fashion sense) will plummet as a result.

Cheerful winter knits, practical yet cool blazers and quality coats — all British fabrics and priced at a fraction of what Casely-Hayford’s gear would normally cost. This is the designer’s final collection for John Lewis so grab it while you can. (johnlewis.com)
