Think everyone’s at it all the time and it’s weird you don’t even have the desire to be, not even a little bit? You’re not alone.

You may not have heard about hyposexuality but it’s something that affects most of us at at least some point in our lives.

Often confused with asexuality, which is when you have no sexual feelings at all, hyposexuality means you have no sexual feelings at all but only for certain periods of time. Asexuality is an orientation, whereas hyposexuality is a diagnosis.

It’s something that can happen to anyone and can occur for many reasons. Stress, tiredness, relationship problems, drug and alcohol abuse and medical issues are just some of them.

It may manifest itself in you losing your sex drive with a partner, or the desire to masturbate, or you may continue having sex but it interferes with your ability to orgasm.

For some, it can last for long periods of time and for others, it will be a short stage. It can sometimes be fixed with simple lifestyle changes such as more sleep or dietary changes but it can also be a result of a situation. For example, you may experience hyposexuality in one relationship but not another.

It can also be caused by the likes of depression and anxiety which can be helped with medical assistance and counselling. If you feel you may need to talk to someone regarding your feelings, it’s best to make an appointment with your GP who will be able to assist you.
